General Community Info Quick Facts About Whitby Schools

Only thirty minutes east of Toronto, Whitby is the Heart of Durham Region and a focal point for your family outings and off-hour enjoyment. A host of attractions, festivals and year-round events offer something for everyone.

If shopping is to your liking, the downtown area of Whitby called Pearson Lanes (Mary and Brock Streets) has been revitalized into a Victorian project of stores, offices and restaurants that offers over 400 shops and services in the downtown area. In addition, six shopping plazas plus a retail warehouse power centre attract shoppers from Whitby and surrounding areas.

If your pleasure-seeking tendencies lean toward the historical side of our heritage, you'll definitely enjoy a trip to both historic Whitby - which is one of more than 200 other Ontario cities and towns which have taken steps through the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) to ensure that the community's fine buildings are preserved for the future as practical and aesthetic evidence of the past.

For a little more quaintness, look no further than the village of Brooklin. Home to about 2000 people, Brooklin was founded in 1840 at the intersection of Highway 12 and Winchester Road. Originally a milling centre for grinding wheat into flour, there were three flour mills, two tanneries and several saw mills in the village. A brick flour mill, built by Robert and John Campbell in 1848, was still making flour until the end of 1989. An annual event since 1913 has been the Brooklin Spring Fair, which is held the first weekend in June in the community park beside the arena.
